I first stumbled onto johnvertisements when I visited the page of metamuffin (they have also created their own version called meta adservice not to be confused with its beloved silicon valley sibling , so check it out).

If you want to learn more about what johnvertisements are and how they work I suggest reading more about it on raven’s website, but the jist is that silly people can submit silly images that link to silly pages. These silly images can then be displayed at random on the webpages of silly individuals, by emmbeding a bit of silly code. It’s a bit silly, but also plenty of fun.

Sadly I dont know if johnvertisement is the first type of this “people driven ad-banner” service or how deep the lore of joke-advert-banners goes. Besides johnvertisements and the previously mentioned meta adservices, there are a lot more of these “services” available. Here are some examples:
